Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second half pushes Tigers past Lions

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Fletcher Bigham notched his first double-double of the season, while Russ Marr added 20 points to lead Sewanee past Piedmont 86-80, in men's basketball action on Tuesday night in Demorest, Ga.

All five Sewanee starters reached double figures in scoring. Bigham recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks, while Marr contributed four steals, four assists, and a block. Luka Avaliani and Tre Corrigan both tallied 14 points; Corrigan added six assists and two boards while Avaliani chipped in six rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Graham Smith rounded out the Tigers' double-digit scoring with 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.

Sewanee shot 42% from the field, generating 12 second-chance points, 38 points in the paint, and 13 off of turnovers.

The first half featured back-and-forth action, with neither team pulling away. Piedmont grabbed its largest lead of the night, going up by six with just over five minutes left in the half. However, a quick burst from Marr trimmed the deficit to three. Sewanee closed the half-string, tying the game at 36-36 after a layup and free throw from Avaliani and a layup by Corrigan.

The second half mirrored the first in its early moments, with both teams trading baskets. A Javi Marlowe free throw knotted the score at 46-46 and started a scoring drought of almost two minutes from both teams. Graham Smith broke the deadlock with a fast-break layup, sparking an 18-5 Sewanee run. During the surge, eight different Tigers contributed points, helping Sewanee build a game-high 13-point lead.

Piedmont responded with a 7-0 run, but Sewanee maintained composure at the free-throw line, converting four straight attempts by Bigham and Avaliani to restore a double-digit advantage. The Lions continued to press, but the Tigers sealed the win by sinking seven free throws in the final minute.

Sewanee now heads to Texas taking on LeTourneau on Friday and McMurry on Saturday in Longview. The Tigers will then return to Juhan Gymnasium to host Lagrange on Dec. 4 in the final home game of the calendar year.
