SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Cydney Wright posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and
Olivia Falvey added 13 points, but a slow start to the fourth quarter cost Sewanee in a 76-59 loss to Macalester College on Sunday in the Webster Tip-off Classic in St. Louis, Mo.
The Tigers (0-2) trailed by four points at the half, nine after three periods and seven when Wright netted the first points of the final quarter, but the Scots put together a 20-5 spurt over the next six minutes to put the game away.
Shay Conn registered 11 points in the loss for Sewanee, who struggled from 3-point range, making just 4-of-20.
Peyton Starks paced Macalester with 24 points while Sydney Smith posted 14 and Mary Daley added 12.
Smith netted eight of her 14 points during the decisive run while the Tigers missed 11 consecutive shots and made only 1-of-13 during the stretch.
Sewanee climbed out of a 10-0 hole to start the game, with Smith posting the final four points.
Zoe Sedo's jumper with 5:10 remaining in the opening period for the Tigers on the board and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Wright along with a 3-pointer from Sedo cut the deficit to 17-11.
Baskets by
Elliott Porter and Sedo pulled Sewanee within three at 19-16 two minutes into the second period. The Scots put together a 10-3 run midway through the period, stretching the lead back to 12, thanks to two field goals by Katherine Norquist, an old-fashioned 3-point play from Starks and a 3-pointer by Smith.
Brianna Keating-Robinson answered with a triple and
Faith Humphrey added a layup before a 3-pointer by Conn at the buzzer pulled the Tigers within 35-30 at the break.
The Macalester lead was still five after a Conn basket with six minutes left in the third quarter, but the Scots posted a 12-0 run behind eight straight points by Starks along with field goals by Daley and Ellie Corbett.
Hannah Cleveland netted two free throws, part of a 15-for-25 effort at the foul line for the Tigers, and Humphrey made a 3-pointer later in the period. Wright added a layup in the final minute and then another to start the fourth quarter to make it 55-48 before the final run put the game away.
Sewanee hosts Piedmont College on Saturday and LaGrange College on Sunday in the SAA-CCS Challenge next weekend at Juhan Gymnasium.
