SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Alex Schoener netted her third goal of the season, scoring in the final minute to lift the Sewanee Tigers to a 1-0 victory over Marian University in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
With just over a minute remaining, Sewanee earned a penalty corner, setting up a chance to avoid overtime. Natalie BeVier delivered the corner to Cate Crane at the top of the circle, who then found Schoener in front of the goal. Schoener redirected the ball past the keeper, sealing the Tigers' win.
The game remained scoreless through a closely contested first half, with Marian holding a slight 8-7 edge in shots. However, Sewanee controlled the second half, outshooting Marian 18-13 and recording nine shots on goal compared to the Sabres' five.
Claire Damare and Taylor Klesel combined for five saves in Sewanee's shutout effort, while Marian goalkeeper Emilee Clarey registered eight saves.
Sewanee will return to action tomorrow, hosting Concordia Wisconsin at noon at Puett Field in another non-conference matchup. The Tigers will then travel next weekend for rematches against Marian and Concordia Wisconsin, this time in conference play.
