Field Hockey drops 3-2 decision against Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Natalia BeVier collected a goal and an assist, but the Tigers fell in field hockey action on Friday night at Puett Field against Rhodes.

Sewanee broke through first with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half. BeVier took a penalty corner and found Caroline Bridges at the back post, who tipped it in to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Rhodes managed two shots and two corners in the first half, both were off target, for a 0-0 first period.

The Tigers ramped up their offense in the second period, taking four shots and earning four corners compared to just one for Rhodes. Their lone shot on goal resulted in the opening score. Goalkeeper Claire Damare also made two key saves to preserve the lead.

However, Rhodes responded with back-to-back goals within the first 10 minutes of the third period, taking a 2-1 advantage.

With just over eight minutes remaining, Rhodes extended the lead to 3-1 when Maria Zaporozhski fired a long shot from outside the circle that Layla Anderson redirected for the score.

Sewanee battled until the end, with BeVier capitalizing on a rebound off the Lynx goalkeeper's pads to make it 3-2 with just over a minute left. Despite the late surge, Rhodes held on for the win.

Sewanee outshot Rhodes 14-13, but the Lynx managed two more shots on goal. The Tigers also edged Rhodes in penalty corners, 8-7. Damare and Taylor Klessel combined for five saves in goal for Sewanee.

The Tigers will return to action on Sunday, hosting the University of Mary Washington in a Collegiate Field Hockey Conference matchup at Puett Field. Game time is set for Noon CT.
