Dominant first half sends men's hoops past Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Russ Marr posted a season high 29 points against Rhodes as the Tigers came away with the win in basketball action on Friday night in Memphis.

Sewanee tallied eight blocks and 13 steals in their win. Marr added four steals, three blocks, three rebounds, and three assists. Eli Holland collected three steals and Fletcher Bigham posted two. Rashaun Williams followed Marr with 17 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

The Tigers dominated the first half as they held the Lynx to just three points for the last 10 minutes of the first period and went on a 26-to-3 run. Seven different Tigers collected points in that period, as they built a 27 point lead going into halftime, 44-17. Sewanee shot 52 percent from the field compared to Rhode's 21 percent. Rashaun Williams led the Tigers with 11 and Marr posted 9 in the first half.

Rhodes came out strong in the second half as they were 10-of-16 from behind the arch and shot 54 percent from the field. A late 25-to-6 run at the end of the send half from Rhodes created a competitive end of the game, as 12 points from Trevor Lombard brought the Lynx within 10 points with a minute and half left. Rhodes sent Williams to the line with 1:19 left as he sank both. Arness Georgetown II was sent to the charity stripe next but made one-of-two to get the Lynx within eight. A three with 17 seconds left brought Rhodes within five, but a quick foul sent Luka Avaliani to the line. Avaliani connected on both to end the game, 80-73.

The Tigers travel to Hendrix on Sunday for tip-off at 3 p.m. before returning home for their last regular season home games against Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
