SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey collected 13 point and eight rebounds while
Faith Humphrey and
Shay Conn each netted 11 points, but Asbury pulled away in the fourth quarter in an 80-52 victory over Sewanee in women's basketball action Tuesday afternoon in Wilmore, Ky.
The Tigers made just 36 percent (17-for-47) from the field, including 7-for-28 in the first half, but still trailed just 27-21 at intermission. Asbury cranked up the offense in the second half, posting 53 points while making 21-of-41 shots in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles also scored 32 points off 34 Sewanee turnovers in the contest.
Falvey and Humphrey each made a pair of 3-pointers for Sewanee, which shot 8-of-22 from behind the arc, but the miscues added up in the second half.
Trinity Shearer paced the Eagles with 25 points and seven assists. Camryn Preston and Haleigh Releford netted 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the home team.
Lilly Phillips connected on a 3-pointer for a 5-4 Tiger lead early in the contest but baskets by Shearer and Releford and a triple from Preston put Asbury in front, 11-5.
Cydney Wright's two foul shots to open the second period pulled Sewanee within, 11-9, before consecutive 3-pointers from Releford and Abigail Harris and a layup by Shearer made it 19-9.
Another triple by Shearer stretched the lead to 23-10, but Conn and
Kayla Antoine both registered field goals and Falvey drilled a three, cutting the deficit to 23-18 with just over three minutes left in the half. Falvey made another three with a minute remaining and Sewanee trailed 27-21 at the break.
Humphrey drilled another triple and Falvey made two foul shots early in the third quarter and a 3-pointer from Wright made it six-point game midway through the period. Three straight Sewanee turnovers turned into seven consecutive points over a one-minute stretch for Asbury, with a 3-pointer and a layup by Releford and another layup, this one from Spencer Harvey.
Brianna Keating-Rendon's triple ended a three-minute scoring drought for the Tigers and a 12-0 run for the Eagles. Conn added a 3-pointer late in the quarter but Ma'Kiya West answered with her own trifecta and Asbury led 54-40 after three periods.
Humphrey made a 3-pointer early in the final quarter but the Eagles pulled away over the next four minutes with an 11-0 spurt, with Preston and Shearer combining for nine of the points.
Sewanee returns to SAA action this weekend, traveling to Millsaps on Friday (6 p.m.) and Birmingham-Southern on Sunday (1 p.m.).
