SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Cydney Wright and
Olivia Falvey each netted 14 points, leading four players in double figures, but Millsaps outscored Sewanee, 42-21, in the middle two quarters en route to an 86-59 victory over the Tigers in women's basketball action Friday night in Jackson, Miss.
Sewanee (2-11, 0-2 SAA) trailed just 15-13 at the end of one quarter before the Majors (12-2, 3-0) posted a 21-10 scoring advantage in the second period. Millsaps outscored the Tigers, 21-10, in the third quarter and never looked back in the contest.
Faith Humphrey finished with 13 and seven rebounds and
Kayla Antoine added 11 points and 10 rebounds while Falvey grabbed eight boards and Wright had six. Sewanee shot just 34 percent from the field in the game, including 4-for-17 in the second quarter and 5-of-17 in the third period.
Haley Franklin led all scorers with 30 points for the Majors, connecting on 11-of-15 shots overall. Millsaps made 56 percent overall from the field and 8-of-18 from 3-point range.
The Majors scored the first six points of the game before
Lilly Phillips connected on a 3-pointer for the Tigers, who shot 5-for-25 from behind the arc in the game. Garin Freeman made two straight field goals for Millsaps, pushing the lead to 10-3 in the early going.
Falvey's basket midway through the period started a 10-3 run for Sewanee, with Antoine making one foul shot and adding a basket. Falvey's old-fashioned 3-point play pulled the Tigers within, 13-11, and the teams traded free throws to end the quarter.
Three-pointers from Emily Adams and Helena Roe were part of a 9-0 spurt to start the second period for the Majors, but Falvey and Wright each scored to make the deficit seven. Another triple by Roe stretched the lead back to 11, but two free throws from Antoine preceded two baskets by Franklin, giving Millsaps a 36-23 advantage at the break.
Franklin made two field goals and Adams added another triple to start the third quarter, pushing the lead to 18. Wright and Humphrey answered with baskets, but the Tigers would not get closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Sewanee concludes its current four-game road swing Sunday at Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.
