SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey posted 23 points and
Brianna Keating-Rendon added 10 off the bench, but Sewanee turnovers led to 43 points in an 85-61 loss to Berry College in women's basketball action here Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (3-13, 1-4 SAA) committed 37 turnovers in the contest, including 20 in the first half, many of them live-ball miscues that led to points for the Vikings, who shot 57 percent from the field and made 7-of-15 from 3-point range, including 5-for-10 in the second half.
Berry (9-7, 3-2) outscored the Tigers, 27-8, in the third quarter, breaking open a 10-point halftime advantage. The Vikings opened the period with a 13-1 spurt that included two baskets by Jeryn Jarrett and a field goal and a 3-pointer from Sylvia Kahoro.
Sewanee posted six turnovers and missed its first five shots before a layup by Falvey at the 4:58 mark was the first field goal of the quarter for the home team.
Lilly Phillips followed with a 3-pointer for the Tigers, but Sewanee ended the period with a three-minute scoring drought.
Kenadie netted a triple and Karlee Armstrong added an old-fashioned 3-point play for the Vikings before layups by Armstrong and Elly Callihan ended the quarter with Berry in front, 62-33.
Sewanee struggled offensively in the first quarter, netting just two points in the first five minutes before Falvey's first 3-pointer of the half pulled the Tigers within, 6-5.
Kayla Antoine posted the opening basket and another for a 7-6 edge but then Sewanee did not record a field goal for more than three minutes into a Falvey layup in the final minute.
The Tigers trailed 12-11 until a short baseline jumper from Berry's Lee just before the quarter buzzer. The Vikings started the second quarter with a 9-0 spurt behind a jumper by Callie Jackson, a 3-pointer from Lee and two free throws apiece by Kahoro and Callihan.
Falvey made a 3-pointer from the corner to end the run and added two more midway through the period, cutting the Berry lead to 28-20, but baskets by Jackson and Callihan extended the advantage to 13.
Antoine had a layup and
Faith Humphrey connected on 1-of-2 foul shots before a backdoor layup by
Cydney Wright, who spent most of the half in foul trouble, made it 35-25 Berry at intermission. Falvey made 4-of-5 from behind the arc and netted 14 points while Callihan paced the Vikings with 10 points. Sewanee committed 20 turnovers in the half, leading to 26 points for Berry.
Sewanee continues a four-game homestand next weekend, hosting Rhodes at 6 p.m. on Friday and Hendrix at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
