SEWANEE, Tenn. – Tre Corrigan collected a career-high 24 points, but Sewanee struggled behind the arc as they fell to Oglethorpe 71-77 in men's basketball action on Friday night in Sewanee.
Corrigan added four rebounds and three assists to his night as two other Tigers posted double-digits. Luka Avaliani posted 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and Russ Marr tallied 11 points with five rebounds, four steals, two blocks, and two assists.
Corrigan connected on his first three of the half to open play for the Tigers, as both teams exchanged leads in the first minutes of play. With 11:03 on the clock, the Tigers went on a 14-to-2 run, as Marr tallied six and Cody Baerlocher, Reid Carrier, Graham Smith, and Eli Holland all scored two points each to build a seven-point lead. Sewanee maintained their lead for the remainder of the half, leading 38-30.
A driving layup from Corrigan opened the scoring in the second half followed by a field goal from Avaliani and Corrigan's second three within the first three minutes. However, with just under 15 minutes on the clock, the Tigers' shooting went cold and the Petrels went on a 14-to-two run to tie the game at 52 all. With a tie game, Corrigan was the only Tiger to find the back of the net as he collected Sewanee's next 11 points, staying within one.
Down one with 3:06 left in the game, Marr produced a steal and connected with Avaliani to put Sewanee back ahead by one. Both teams exchanged a set of layups trading the lead back and forth, but two back-to-back threes from Oglethorpe put the Petrels ahead with 50 seconds on the clock. The Petrels then collected six points from the charity stripe to secure their win while the Tigers only collected four more points from Avaliani and Corrigan.
Sewanee was just 4-of-25 from behind the arc and 29-of-71 from the field. They collected 50 points in the paint and generated 22 points from turnovers.
The Tigers continue conference play against Berry on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Sewanee.
