Tigers fall short against Petrels

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Olivia Falvey posted a career-high 26 points and Kayla Antoine posted her eighth double-double of the season, but an early lead from Oglethorpe made the difference in women's basketball action as the Tigers fell 84-72 Friday night in Sewanee.

Falvey opened the day for the Tigers by sinking a three and Antoine followed with a layup. Falvey connected on four of the next five baskets for the Tigers to close out the first period.

Sewanee opened the second period in the same fashion as the first, Falvey sinking a three and Antoine connected, making all six of Sewanee's following points. Lilly Phillips was the only other Tiger to get on the board, as she tallied a three. Falvey closed the second period again as she drove to the basket for a last-minute jumper and drew the foul to get within 12 of the Petrels.

The Petrels started out the third on a 10-to-2 run, however, Faith Humphrey connected on the next five points. Oglethorpe recorded a second 11-to-2 run before Humphrey posted two free throws with 14 seconds on the clock. A quick layup from Carley Bell gave the Tigers possession and Phillips produced a buzzer-beating three.

Sewanee opened the period again with a three, this time from Brianna Keating-Rendon. With 3:50 on the clock, the Tigers started an offensive push with two back-to-back threes from Falvey of two consecutive turnovers from the Petrels, an immediate steal and layup from Humphrey, and a free-throw from Cydney Wright brought the Tigers within 12 points with 2:42 to go.

Both teams went back and forth to end the game as they traded off baskets, but Sewanee was unable to catch Oglethorpe's lead.

Behind the arc, three different Tigers connected, Falvey tallied a career-high four, Phillips collected three, and Keating-Rendon recorded one.

Leading the club with points, Falvey also added five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Humphrey also recorded double-digits, ending with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.

The Tigers continue conference play at home on Sunday against Berry at 1 p.m.
