Weller posts her fourth double-double as the Tigers fall in 5 sets to Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Jacqueline Weller recorded her fourth double-double of the season as the Tigers had another tight match against Centre on Tuesday night in Juhan Gymnasium, as Sewanee fell in five (25-20, 24-26, 27-25, 22-25, 12-15).

The Tigers started out strong as they never trailed in the first set and got the first set off a block by Savannah Gann and Olivia Jones, 25-20. The Tigers hit a combined .303 percent to start the night off.

In the second set, Centre came out strong and had more kills and attack attempts than the Tigers with 16 kills to our 8 and 42 attempts to our 33. Sewanee had the lead up 21-18, but off a late 6-point run by Centre, they got up 24-21. Sewanee came back within striking distance off an attacking error by Centre and a kill by Gann. Despite the three set points saved by the Tigers, Centre took the second set, 26-24.

After an extremely close third set that saw multiple lead changes and ties, and both teams fought off set points, a kill from Weller sealed the set for the Tigers, 27-25.

The fourth set was another battle between the Colonels and the Tigers. The Tigers held the lead for the first half but a five-point run put Centre back in the set to take the lead 20-18. The Colonels held Sewanee to only 4 more points in the set as they came out on top, 25-22.

Sewanee started off the fifth set strong as they built themselves a 4-0 lead. However, Centre came back and was able to pull ahead 13-9. A kill from Weller and Ashley Crosby and an attack error from Centre gave the Tigers the next points, but Centre was able to come out on top of two back-to-back kills.

Weller and Crosby recorded double-digit kills for Sewanee as they had 13 and 11 respectively. Three players posted double-digit digs, Sophia Caruso with 18, Adele Cassidy with 17, and Weller with 13.

Sewanee returns home Saturday to face Hendrix and Sunday against Rhodes, finishing off their five-match homestand.
