ATLANTA - Announced by the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) on Monday, five players from the University of the South softball team were selected to the All-SAA Team, while
Merritt Yackey was named the league's Coach of the Year.
Selected and voted on by the head coaches, Yackey is wrapping up his eighth season at Sewanee, and his team shattered previous records. Recording 12 wins during the regular season, the mark was the fifth-most in program history. Winning seven conference games and three series, the seven wins is the third-highest in school history.
On the diamond, the program set new marks in batting average (.262), hits (253), extra base hits (53), runs batted in (111), total runs scored (127), stolen bases (65) and earned run average (4.87).
On the All-Confernece team,
Michaela Walker and
Alice Charboneau were Second Team members, while
Eve Bournias,
Zoe Crockett and
Hannah Wilson were Honorable Mentions.
The five selections on the postseason award are the most in the SAA era and the most since 2004, when the team collected nine.
Statistics mentioned in the press release are from conference contests.
Walker, a senior from LaVergne, Tenn., earns her first All-SAA honor in her career. She tossed 60 innings in conference play with a 5-6 record and 3.03 ERA. Tossing five complete games, she also hurled two shutouts.
At the plate, she posted a .326 batting average with 15 hits and seven RBI.
Charboneau, a senior from Manassas, Va., secures her second postseason award. She led the team with a .357 batting average in SAA play with a 1.036 on-base plus slugging. Slugging .619 thanks to three home runs and two doubles, she also drove in 11 RBI.
Bournias, a junior from Grosse Point, Mich., collects her first All-Conference accolade in her career. She tallied a batting average of .298 scored 10 runs and swiped six bases. Posting a .353 slugging percentage, she laced six doubles.
Crockett, a junior from Humboldt, Tenn., snags her second All-SAA recognition in her career. Setting the new school record for stolen bases in a season with 23, she was 11-of-12 in conference play in the category. Posting a batting average of .320 with 10 runs scored snd seven RBI.
Wilson, a freshman from Medina, Tenn., picks up her first All-SAA award in her first year of collegiate softball. Posting 13 hits and 11 runs scored, she tallied an on-base percentage of .386. She also threw out three runners and posted 44 putouts behind the plate.
