Men's Tennis Heads to St. Louis for NCAA Regional Rounds; Theron and Wicklund Qualify for Individual Draws

INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 12 University of the South men's tennis team will begins the 2023 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Friday. After earning a first round bye, the Tigers will start the weekend with a matchup with No. 29 George Fox University (Ore.).

BACK IN THE BIG DANCE: Sewanee is back in the NCAA Championships for a second straight season and the 19th overall in program history. Making it to the second round last season, the Tigers will start there this weekend in the 2023 edition. 

WASHU SECTIONAL: Sewanee will be participating in the St. Louis Sectional this weekend, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. The pod includes:  
  • Carthage College (Wis.) - College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
  • Covenant College (Ga.) - Collegiate Conference of the South (At-Large)
  • George Fox University (Ore.) - Northwest Conference
  • Greenville University (Ill.) - Upper Midwest Athletic Conference
  • The University of the South (Tenn.) - Southern Athletic Association
  • Washington University (Mo.) - University Athletic Association (At-Large)
With Carthage defeating Covenant and George Fox knocking off Greenville on Thursday, the Firebirds will take on the hosts in WashU at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., the Bruins will tangle with the Tigers of Sewanee. 

THERON AND WICKLUND TO INDIVIDUALS: Sewanee's Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund have been selected to participate in the individual draw of the 2023 NCAA Championships, set to begin on May 18 from the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla. 

Theron, who will play in both singles and doubles, is ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic South region in singles with a record of 18-4 and 13-2 this spring. 

This will be the second time in his career that he has qualified for the NCAA Championships as an individual after doing so in his freshman year in 2021 with Methodist University (N.C.). The junior transfer was defeated in the first round that season to James Hopper of Case Western Reserve (Ohio), who finished th event in the quarterfinals. 

In the singles championship, 32 players qualify for the event. 

For Wicklund, this will be the first time he will participate in the individual championship, as he joins his partner in Theron. The duo has posted a 19-3 overall record and 16-2 spring record. The team is ranked second in the Atlantic South region. 

In doubles, 16 teams from across the country will participate in the championship. 

Draws will be announced on May 17. 

FAST STARTS: Sewanee posted a 58-14 record in doubles this spring, led by double-digits wins by their expected top-three in the lineup: Theron/Wicklund (16-2), Peyton Erck/Noah Holsclaw (12-3) and Talman Ramsey/Gil Weston (14-4).
