Mary Marcum Named to AVCA's Thirty Under 30 Coaches Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Announced on Thursday morning by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), assistant volleyball coach Mary Marcum was recognized as one of the Thirty Under 30 coaches.

Joining the University of the South volleyball program in 2019, Marcum has been a part of Sewanee's staff for four seasons. Along with her work at the college level, she also serves as Assistant Club Director for the A5 Chattanooga Volleyball Club.

"Being named an AVCA Thirty Under 30 recipient is a high honor in the volleyball world," said head coach Nancy Mueller. "Mary is very deserving of this award as she has given her time and energy to helping build Sewanee into a great program. Her ability to connect with the players has garnered their trust and allowed both her and the players to grow into her potential."

Entering her fifth season with the Tigers in 2023, Marcum has been coaching since 2011.

"This continues to show me that if you surround yourself with strong, like minded individuals, that you can make a difference. Winning this shows that someone who inspires me, feels as though I inspire others. I'm proud of the people that I've chosen to surround myself with, and they push me to be better professionally and personally," said Marcum.

Along with her work in college volleyball, Marcum has also been an integral part of A5 Chattanooga Volleyball Club, a high school club growing the game of volleyball in the area. Serving in multiple capacities, she is also the head coach of the 15-1 national team.

"Mary has been an integral part of developing players and coaches for A5 Chattanooga," added Mueller. "Her shared vision of growing the game in the surrounding area starts by cultivating and building relationships. She knows the game so well and has the ability to relate her knowledge and skill to all age levels. Her continued curiosity of making herself the best coach possible, allows her to grow with our club members."

Thirty Under 30 honors up-and-coming coaches at all levels of volleyball—college, high school and club—and the recipients serve in a range of roles, from head coach to volunteer assistant to club director. Nominees had to be under 30 as of Dec. 31, 2022, to qualify for the award.
