Men's Lacrosse Routs Stormy Petrels to Open SAA Play

ATLANTA - The University of the South limited Oglethorpe University to five goals on 23 shots on Saturday, as the Tigers defeated the Stormy Petrels, 12-5, to open Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Petrels did get the first goal of the game with 12:36 left in the opening stanza. Sewanee did respond with 9:42 left. 

-Phelps Thomas, after rebounding a shot from Davis Gillenwater, found the back of the net to make it a 2-1 lead. 

-OU made it 3-2 with eight minutes remaining in the period, but goals by Davis Gillenwater and Corbet Darden made it a 5-2 lead for the Purple and White at the break. 

-The Petrels made it a 10-4 deficit late in the third quarter, but the Tigers limited the home team to just seven shots in the second half, four in the final period. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Phelps Thomas led the Tigers offense with four goals on the day as eight Tigers scored a goal. 

-Will Wyckoff, Jack Selner and Jake Cohen all had two forced turnovers. 

-Charlie Warren (8-of-13) and Drew Perun (6-of-7) won 14-of-20 face offs. 

OGLETHORPE KEY STATISTICS
-Addison Irwin recorded 37 saves between the pipes for OU, missing his own school record by five. 

-Israel Moore had three points, two goals, for the Petrels.

Sewanee is back home for a two-game homestand, starting with Birmingham-Southern College at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 24, from historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
