Baseball Drops Series to Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The University of the South baseball team was swept in a three-game, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series to Hendrix College over the weekend from the Warrior Baseball Field. 

On Friday, the Warriors took both games of the doubleheader, 4-2 and 8-0. After moving the series finale to Sunday due to weather, Hendrix completed the weekend sweep with a 12-2 victory. 

The Warriors are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll and in the preseason poll in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-Sewanee got the offense going right out of the gate. A lead-off triple by TJ Meyn and a Hunter Herndon base hit gave the visitors the 1-0 lead. 

-After a Charlie Teel free pass, Mike Lewishall laced a base hit to left-center field to make it a 2-0 lead. 

-Hendrix dented the scoreboard in the second on a fielder's choice. 

-Looking to add on, Sewanee had two runners on in the fourth after back-to-back hits by Emmett DeScherer and J.T. Carter, but they were left stranded on base. 

-In the bottom half of the frame, the Warriors tied the game on an RBI double. 

-In the seventh, a two-run single by the Warriors was the deciding factor for the series-opening victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-In the second game of the twin bill on Friday night, the Warriors' bats scored five runs in the first inning capped by a grand slam. 

-In the sixth, the Warriors tacked on three runs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 3
-In the series finale, the Tigers got out to a fast start. After a leadoff walk by Blake Pou and Hunter Herndon reached on a throwing error, Charlie Teel brought the runners home to give Sewanee the 2-0 lead. 

-The Warriors responded quickly in the bottom half with two runs in the frame. 

-Hendrix took the lead for good in the third and added two runs each in the fifth and sixth to extend the lead to 7-2 after six innings of play. 

-The Warriors secured the series sweep with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-In game one, TJ Meyn, Mike Lewishall and J.T. Carter each had two hits in the game. Hunter Herndon and Lewishall each had an RBI. 

-In the nightcap on Friday, Meyn, Lewishall, Jadon Fetrow and Luke Thompson all had base knocks. 

-Sunday's series finale was led by Charlie Teel with a 1-for-3 day with two RBI. 

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS
-Joseph Watts recorded a 5-for-7 weekend with four walks and runs each and drove in six RBI. 

UP NEXT
The Tigers will continue their spring break trip in Memphis starting on Tuesday, taking part in March Madness II from USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. Playing five games in five days, the tournament starts with a doubleheader against Olivet College (Mich.) on Tuesday afternoon.
