SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South women's lacrosse team started the 2023 season on Sunday from Puett Field with a 13-11 loss to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After the Falcons got the scoring started on a free-position shot,
Casey Thomsen found an
Emma Burns pass for the Tigers' first goal of the season to even the score at one.
-UWRF took advantage of the draw controls, as the Falcons had possession for almost two minutes and pushed the lead to 4-1. After
Winnie Pajcic forced a turnover, the Tigers turned the ball back over ot the Falcons and would later make it a 5-1 score on a free-position.
-Trailing 6-1 with two minutes remaining in the quarter, Sewanee's offense got rolling. After
Sally Herrington ended the scoring drought, the Tigers won the ensuing draw and scored two more times.
-With UWRF leading 6-4 after 15 minutes, the second quarter was a defensive battle, but Bailey O'Donovan made it a 7-4 score with 4:46 left in the half.
-Early in the third quarter, back-to-back goals by
Lizzie Chamberlin and
Brooke Sigmon made it a one-goal game, 7-6.
-After another free-position goal by UWRF, the Tigers answered with two more goals by Burns and Sigmon to tie the game at eight goals apiece with 6:32 left in the period.
-Late in the game, trailing 12-10, Sewanee, following a
Marlin Price caused turnover and ground ball, Burns found the back of the cage to make it a 12-11 deficit with 1:55 left.
-Sewanee did win the ensuing draw by
Alexa Berg, but a turnover gave the ball back to the visitors to seal the contest.

Emma Burns led the Tigers with four points on two goals and assists each.

Brooke Sigmon each had two points on goals on Sunday.
-On defense,
Winnie Pajcic had a career-high in caused turnovers (10) and ground balls (7).

Lizzie Chamberlin led the team with four draws.
WISCONSIN RIVER FALLS KEY STATISTICS
-Bailey O'Donovan led the Falcons, as she was a part of seven of UWRF's 13 goals on the day. Scoring five times, she also added two assists. On the draw, she also picked up seven wins.
-Josie Johnson also had seven draw controls.
UP NEXT
The Tigers will hit the road next Saturday, Feb. 25 with a contest with the Lions of Piedmont University. Opening draw will commence at 11 a.m. CT from Demorest, Ga.
