DEMOREST, Ga. - The University of the South women's lacrosse team, thanks to a late free-position goal by Piedmont University, dropped the contest, 20-19, Saturday afternoon fro the Walker Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After the teams traded goals to start the first five minutes of the game,
Emma Burns, after a
Sally Herrington ground ball, netted the goal to give the Tigers the 3-2 advantage.
-Sewanee kept the advantage until the 4:40 mark in the period when a free position goal by Machaela Smith made it a 5-5 game.
-After
Marlin Price won the ensuing draw,
Casey Thomsen went down and gave Sewanee the mead again, 6-5.
-Tied at six in the last seconds of the period, Herrington found
Brooke Sigmon's pass to give the Purple Tigers the 7-6 edge after 15 minutes.
-The second quarter did not see a goal scored until the under-7 mark in the half when Piedmont tied the game up at seven goals apiece. For the Lions, they added two more to make it a 9-7 lead, which they would maintain for the remainder of the half.
-After an
Ellie Tate Schutte victory on the draw, she found Herrington for the goal to make it a 10-9 score at the break.
-Leading 11-10 early in the third, Piedmont scored four straight goals to make the lead the biggest of the contest, a five-goal differential, 15-10.
-Sewanee did make it a 17-12 deficit after three quarters thanks to a Price goal from a
Lizzie Chamberlin pass.
-That goal by the Purple and White started a big rally. After winning back-to-back draws that led to goals, trailing 17-14, a Thomsen caused turnover then a pass to
Alexa Berg for the strike made it a 17-15 deficit with 12:54 left in regulation.
-After winning the ensuind draw, Price passed to Berg again for the goal that made it 17-16 in favor of the Lions.
-Piedmont did score two goals to increase its lead to three, 19-16, with nine minutes remaining. After taking the draw on a foul, Berg was there again, finding Schutte's pass for the goal.
-Winning the draw again, Sewanee made it a 19-18 game with another strike by Berg.
-With under seven minutes to go, Thomsen tied the game at 19 goals apiece thanks to a pass from Price.
-Tied with less than a minute to go in regulation, Piedmont forced a turnover on Sewanee in the midfield and ran down the ball to the 8-meter line, where they drew a foul. Lindley Ward, on a free-position, netted the game-winner for the Lions with six seconds to go.
SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS

Alexa Berg led the Tigers with five goals on the afternoon, while
Casey Thomsen totaled four points and three goals and an assist.

Sally Herrington scored four points on three goals and an assist. On ball control, she scooped up six ground balls and forced a team-high four turnovers.

Marlin Price won 10 draw controls and scored five points on three assists and two goals.
PIEDMONT KEY STATISTICS
-Merryn Bumpass led all attackers with seven points on five assists and two goals.
-Ava Trankina had five draws, three goals and three caused turnovers each.
