LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of the South men's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a 9-5 victory at Transylvania University on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee opened the scoring after picking off a failed Transylvania clear.
Luke Valentine scored the first goal of the season for the Purple Tigers.
-After winning the faceoff,
Ashton Anton made it a 2-0 lead with nine minutes left in the opening frame.
-Transy took advantage of a Sewanee slashing penalty and made it a 2-1 lead. However, the Tigers countered on a man-up opportunity later in the period. Valentine scored on the man-up with four minutes remaining in the period.
-The Tigers made it a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes and added their fifth goal by Anton.
-Sewanee had a 6-2 halftime lead thanks to a
Davis Gillenwater strike.
-Trailing 7-3 going into the final period, the Pioneers made it a 7-5 lead with two goals by Will Warner. However, a
Charles Moran strike and a late goal by
Will Wyckoff sealed the dub for Sewanee.
-In the sixth meeting all-time between the two schools, Sewanee picked up its third dub over Transylvania and snapped a three-game losing skid. The Tigers last defeated the Pioneers in 2018, also in Lexington, 13-3.

Luke Valentine picked up the hat trick in his first game of the new year on five shots. The senior also assisted on two shots for five points.

Davis Gillenwater and
Ashton Anton each scored twice for the Tigers.
-The Purple and White took 13-of-18 wins at the faceoff.
Charlie Warren won 7-of-10, while
Drew Perun won 6-of-8.

Greg Ix (1-0) stopped seven shots and allowed just five goals in full time.
TRANSYLVANIA KEY STATISTICS
-Dalton Hubbs netted three goals on the day.
-Topher Hays (0-1) posted 14 saves in 60 minutes.
