SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South baseball team earned a series win over Brescia University on Saturday, Feb. 11. After the Tigers cruised to a 7-1 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader, the second game, scheduled for seven innings, ended a 8-8 tie after nine innings due to darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The first four and a half innings were quiet on both sides, but the bats came to life for Sewanee in the bottom of the fifth. After
Carson Rowland led off the inning with a free pass,
Will Yarbro reached base on an infield bunt single.
-Four batters later, after
Blake Pou reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases,
Jadon Fetrow sent a ball off the fence in left-center for a bases-clearing triple.
-Following a pitching change and a
Hunter Herndon free pass,
Jack Roode also went to left-center for a two-run triple to make it 5-0 in favor of the home team.
-
Mike Lewishall had the loudest hit of the inning with a two-run homer over the left field fence to make it 7-0.
-Brescia did avoid the shutout with a run in the sixth, but
Hampton Long slammed the door with three shutout innings in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-Not a lot of action happened in the first couple of innings. In the third, the Bearcats were the first to blink offensively with an RBI double by Kendal Kortz followed by a Miguel Rubio RBI base knock.
-The lead did not last long for the visitors, as the Tigers answered thanks to a leadoff walk by
Alden Wright. With two outs,
Hunter Herndon brought Wright home on an RBI single. Moving up to second on the play, Herndon scored on a
Will Yarbro base knock.
-Moving ahead to the bottom of the fifth, Sewanee reclaimed the lead thanks to a two-run single by
Mike Lewishall. He later scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.
-Brescia made it a 6-4 game in the sixth on a Gavin Reames home run, and the Bearcats tied the game in the seventh on an Aaron Elssasser RBI single and a Reames sac fly.
-After Sewanee could not score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, the game was forced into extras. The Bearcats took the lead on an RBI single by Michael Barrow. Brescia also added a run during the play on a Sewanee error.
-In the bottom of the eighth, Sewanee started the inning on a leadoff walk by
Charlie Teel. After
Jonah Patton pinch ran for him, Wright singled and pinch hitter
Carson Rowland loaded the bases with a single.
-After a flyout, Herndon brought Patton home on a fielder's choice. Next, Yarbro tied the game again with an RBI single. Despite Herndon stealing third base to put the winning run 90 feet away, the inning ended on a strikeout.
-Nearly the end of daylight after eight innings, the umpires and head coaches agreed to one more inning. Despite a one-out single,
Braeden Mefford used two strikeouts to keep the game even at eight runs apiece.
-In the bottom of the ninth,
Mac Gortney reached on an error and later took second. With the winning run in scoring position, the Tigers were unable to bring him home and the game was called after nine innings due to darkness.
-In over 100 years of Sewanee Baseball, in 2,248 games, the program has 11 ties. Brescia and Vanderbilt each have two ties against Sewanee all-time, the most in program history. The oldest varsity sport in university history, baseball started play in 1871.
SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-In game one,
Jack Roode had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI.
Mike Lewishall had the two-run homer, while
Jadon Fetrow brought three runs home on a triple.

Aidan Lenzen (1-0) picked up the win, tossing six innings of one-run, four-hit ball and striking out seven.
Hampton Long picked up his second career save with three shutout innings, allowing two hits.
-In the nightcap,
Will Yarbro had two hits and RBI each, while
Mike Lewishall also had two runs batted in.

Alden Wright reached base three times with two of Sewanee's 10 walks on the day and a base hit.
Blake Pou also had two free passes.
BRESCIA KEY STATISTICS
-Juan Guzman and Wyatt Griskey each had two hits for Brescia in the first game of the doubleheader.
-Kendal Kortz led the Bearcats in game two with three hits in four at-bats and scored three runs.
