Baseball Wins on Opening Day

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South baseball team picked up a 4-2 victory over Brescia University, Friday afternoon from Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After Sewanee's Matt Munn recorded a pick-off at first base on defense, the Tiger bats went to work. After a leadoff double by Blake Pou, Jack Roode would later have a base hit up the middle. 

-In the third, after Luke Short reached on a muffed error by the first baseman, Hunter Herndon brought him in on Brescia's second error in the inning. 

-The Bearcats responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run single by Joshua Martini. 

-After a clean top of the fifth, Sewanee responded with the eventual go-ahead run in the bottom half. Drew Noblet, who was pinch running, scored while Pou was in a run-down. 

-The Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Mac Gortney.  

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Mac Gortney and Jack Roode each drove in an RBI. Blake Pou recorded a double in his first game with Sewanee.

-Matt Munn (1-0) posted seven strikeouts in five innings. Jake Nevle picked up his first save in his first-ever collegiate appearance on the mound with four shutout frames. 

BRESCIA KEY STATISTICS
-Joshua Martini went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Bearcats

-Preston Franey (0-2) allowed two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
