Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Slow start sends Rhodes past men's hoops

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Russ Marr posted 25 points and seven rebounds but the Tigers made just 5-of-27 from the 3-point range as the Tigers were unable to recover from an early deficit as they fell on the second day of Rhodes Holiday Classic to Rhodes 79-90 on Monday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.

Four Sewanee players recorded double-digits for the day as Rashaun Williams tallied 13 points, and Fletcher Bigham and Cody Baerlocker both added 12.

The Tigers ended the first half with an 11-to-3 spurt as Marr collected a three, a layup, and two free-throws to cut the Lynx's lead to 10. Baerlocher and Blake Bouldin added the Tigers additional four points from a layup and two free throws. However, Sewanee could not close on the early lead built by Rhodes as the Tigers connected on only one of ten from behind the arc in the first half.

The Tigers opened the second half off a three from Bigham as all five of the starters contributed within the opening five minutes with four of five finding the basket and Tre Corrigan and Graham Smith collecting steals. Sewanee came within four points of the Lynx at 12:32 on the clock after Bigham connected two free points from the charity stripe, but two back-to-back turnovers and several missed chances by the Tigers allowed 11 unanswered points as Rhodes built the lead back to 15. In the last 23 seconds, Reid Carrier was fouled behind the arc sending him to the line where he connected on all three, bringing Sewanee within nine, but a fastbreak by Rhodes sealed the win off a dunk by Zavien Williams.

Sewanee collected 19 points off the bench, 13 points from turnovers, and 12 fast break points, but tallied only six second-chance points compared to 15 by Rhodes.

Sewanee travels to Salem Virginia for the Cregger Invitational on Dec. 29 and 30 before resuming conference play on Jan. 5 against Millsaps.
