Miscues hinder football in Homecoming loss

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Fifth-ranked Trinity University took advantage of three turnovers, turning those into 21 points, in posting a 44-6 victory over Sewanee in football action here Saturday at Harris Field.

The Tigers (3-6, 2-5 SAA) lost their season finale at home and dropped their final two home contests to teams ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Sewanee defense forced five punts and Trinity missed a field goal among its 13 possessions, but miscues set-up the visitors deep in Sewanee territory on multiple occasions.

Trinity (8-1, 7-0) scored on two plays after an interception on Sewanee's opening drive of the game and then a low snap and fumble on a punt allowed TU to score again from the Tigers' four-yard line on the next possession. Trinity's Roan Erwin returned an interception 39 yards for the final score of the game just seconds into the fourth quarter.

Jeremiah Young finished 12-of-26 passing for 142 yards for the Tigers, subbing for an injured Jacorin Thomas, who was hurt in the second quarter. Thomas rushed 11 times for 45 yards before leaving the game.

Trinity quarterback Tucker Horn completed 16-of-26 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while the visitors rushed for 199 total yards amongst six backs.

Sewanee finishes the schedule with a trip to Georgetown, Texas, next week, facing Southwestern University.

The Tigers defense got a 3-and-out to start the game but on Sewanee's first offensive play, Thomas was pressured and hit as he threw and Trinity's Quinn McDermott intercepted at the Sewanee 18. Winston Hutchinson rushed for the 18 yards on two plays, the last one from four yards out for a touchdown.

A low snap on a punt on the Tigers' next possession was recovered by Sewanee punter Jack Satterfield but he was unable to get off the kick and Trinity was set-up at the four. Justin Carmouche gained the four yards on the first play for another TD and the visitors missed the extra point.

Horn hit Will Taylor for 12 yards on the first play of Trinity's next drive, but a false start penalty pushed the ball back and Tyler Huettel booted a 36-yard field goal for a 16-0 Trinity advantage midway through the opening period.

Sewanee answered with an almost seven-minute drive, picking up three first downs. Thomas carried five times on the 12-play drive, including for eight yards on the first play and 14 yards for a first down to the Trinity 23. After a third down sack, Satterfield converted a 43-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 16-3.

Trinity answered with its most complete drive of the half, going 62 yards on six plays. Horn hit Ryan Merrifield for 15 yards. Cole Monago caught an 18-yard pass and Legend Grigsby rushed for 14 before a 31-yard completion down the left side to Monago for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 23-3.

Thomas rushed three times for 27 yards later in the period but was injured on the third run. Young entered and completed a five-yard pass to Cooper Alford and found Dyer Barnes for 15 yards. Young then caught his own deflected pass, gaining 14 yards on the play for a first down. The drive stalled inside the 20 and a 15-yard penalty pushed it back before Satterfield kicked a 46-yard field goal.

Trinity scored again just before the half thanks to a fake punt near midfield that extended the drive. Monago caught a 21-yard pass and two plays later Merrifield's 10-yard reception put Trinity ahead, 30-6, at intermission.

Merrifield caught a 26-yard TD pass late in the third quarter before the interception return by Erwin posted the final points for Trinity.

After the INT, Sewanee started a drive at midfield and Barnes caught a 35-yard pass and drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone, setting up the Tigers at the two, but two incomplete passes and two rushes failed to cross the goal line, ending the drive.
