SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee threw an interception in the end zone and missed a field goal, both in the first half, unable to take advantage of scoring chances and Southwestern scored all of its points in the second half in a 24-0 victory over the Tigers in the season finale Saturday in Georgetown, Texas.
Sewanee (3-7, 2-6 SAA) managed just 186 yards of total offense using second and third-string quarterbacks.
Jeremiah Young finished 7-of-18 passing for 87 yards with one interception while
Jayden Bragg was 6-of-11 for 78 yards.
Walker Robinson rushed for 37 yards on 15 carries, but the Pirates (3-7, 3-5) limited the Tigers to just 2-for-12 on third down.
Dyer Barnes caught eight passes for 117 yards for Sewanee.
Harris Cravens intercepted a pass from Jaylen Spriggs at the Sewanee 3-yard line on the opening drive of the game and the teams traded punts before the Pirates stopped the Tigers on fourth down near midfield. Sewanee made a fourth-down stop on the ensuing Southwestern possession and Barnes made a 45-yard reception between two defenders on the final play of the first period.
Young threw an interception in the end zone early on the second play of the second quarter, but Southwestern's Peyton Ludemann returned the ball and was tackled at the three. The defense forced a short punt and Sewanee had a chance at a field goal on its next possession, but Satterfield's 42-yarder missed wide right.
Satterfield pinned the Pirates inside their own 15 on the next Tigers drive and the defense forced a turnover.
Tucker Kirk stripped the quarterback, Spriggs, on a sack and
Quinn Johnson recovered, setting up the Tigers at the Southwestern 12, but a sack and an unsportsmanlike penalty forced another punt by Sewanee. The contest went to halftime scoreless.
The Pirates wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking the opening drive of the third quarter 61 yards on eight plays, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Leroy Rodriguez. Charlie Fournie booted a 43-yard field goal late in the period for a 10-0 Southwestern advantage.
Spriggs hit Aiden Huerta for 27 yards to the one and the QB got the final yard early in the fourth quarter. Damian Gomez's six-yard scoring run with 5:21 remaining capped the scoring.
