Stewart earns first win as head coach with a 65-45 victory over Covenant

SEWANEE, Tenn. — Cydney Wright posted 17 points, six steals, and five assists as the Tigers took down Covenant on day two of the Sewanee Hoops Classic on Saturday afternoon, securing head coach Jaylynn Stewart's first win with the Tigers, 65-45.

The Tigers opened with a strong start as they built themselves a 14-6 lead in the first three minutes. All of Sewanee's starters made an impact in the first three minutes as Wright produced a turnover, Olivia Falvey netted two field goals, Faith Humphrey and Kayla Antoine added one a piece and Lilly Phillips sunk a three. The Tigers sustained their lead, ending the first period up six.

In the second period, the Tigers maintained their momentum, finding players open under the rim and capitalizing on turnovers. 22 of the Tiger's 34 points came from the paint and they collected 16 points off turnovers. Antoine and Wright each posted 10 points in the first half. Wright also collected five steals and Faith Humphrey and Falvey followed with two a piece.

The Scots opened up the third period with a three and outshot the Tigers by three in the period, but the Tigers maintained a 13-point lead going into the fourth period. Antoine collected eight of Sewanee's 10 points in the period, making all four free throw opportunities and netting two additional field goals.

Sewanee shut Covenant down in the fourth as they made only two-of-10 field goals. The Tigers, on the other hand, shot 55 percent from the field. Sewanee held the Scots scoreless for just under two and a half minutes as they continued to build their lead. Wright added an additional steal in the second half as Humphrey and Falvey both tallied two more.

Antoine ended the game as the Tiger's leading scorer netting 21 points and Falvey also delivered 16 points, four steals, and two rebounds.
