Tigers fall in home opener against LaGrange

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Kayla Antoine posted her third double-double of the year with 15 points and 16 rebounds and Faith Humphrey added 13 points but Sewanee made just 4-of-15 from the 3-point range. The Panthers went on a 20-5 point run to close out the first half, with the Panthers claiming a 53-77 victory in women's basketball action to open the first day of the Sewanee Hoops Classic at Juhan Gymnasium on Friday night.

The Tigers played a competitive first quarter as Humphrey opened up the game sinking a three. Sewanee connected on three triples and made 6-of-12 field goals but gave away nine turnovers which the Panthers capitalized on for 12 points. The period produced six lead changes and one tie of score.

The Tigers closed the gap as they started the quarter with a free-point made by Olivia Falvey followed by two layups and an extra point by Antoine to pull the Tigers within four at 21-15. However, the Panthers went on their run late in the second to close out the half 23-26. The Panthers outshot Sewanee in the second quarter by 10 points with the Tigers making just 3-of-11 field goals.

Sewanee came out strong in the third, outshooting their opponents 16-11, taking advantage of their time at the charity stripe, converting all nine free-point attempts, and posting six points on second-chance attempts.

In the first two and a half minutes of the final quarter, neither team could find the basket, but a layup by Amanda Mclendon broke the rut as the Panthers went on to score the next 18 points, keeping the Tigers scoreless in the fourth until two and a half minutes remaining. Falvey posted five of the Tiger's 11 points in the fourth and Antoine posted four.

LaGrange shot 46 percent from the field compared to 32 percent for the Tigers. Sewanee continues day two of the Hoops Classic tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Covenant.
