SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Kayla Antoine recorded 19 points and
Faith Humphrey added 10 points and nine rebounds, but Sewanee committed 20 turnovers and got off to another slow start in a 69-49 loss to Berea College in women's basketball action Wednesday night in Berea, Ky.
The Tigers (1-2) open the home schedule this weekend, taking on LaGrange College at 5 p.m. on Friday at Juhan Gymnasium and hosting Covenant College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Sewanee made just 2-of-8 field goals and posted seven turnovers in the first quarter, falling behind 20-9 to the Mountaineers. Atyia Moss posted eight points for Berea and the Mountaineers registered eight points off turnovers.
The Tigers seemed to find their stride at the end of the period and into the second quarter, with a layup from
Cydney Wright and a 3-pointer by
Lilly Phillips. Phillips added another triple to start the second period and Antoine posted three straight field goals before the media timeout, pulling the visitors within 26-18.
Two more baskets by Antoine made it a six-point game with three minutes remaining before the half, but four straight free throws by Berea's Jayden Merriweather and a 3-pointer by Nevaeh Bates just before the buzzer put the home team ahead, 36-25, at intermission.
The Mountaineers scored the first seven points of the third quarter, pushing the lead to 18, including a layup and one foul shot by Drea Satori. Sewanee continued to fight, as they have through the first three games this season, putting together a 10-2 spurt late in the period thanks to old-fashioned 3-point plays by Humphrey and Antoine, a basket by
Olivia Falvey and two free throws from Humphrey.
Moss answered with a triple on the other end and Berea took a 52-37 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
Antoine's basket to open the fourth quarter was as close as the Tigers would get. Madison Howell, Satori and Merriweather each posted field goals, stretching the lead to 59-39.
Moss finished with 19 points and Merriweather netted 11 while Kayla McClendon and Satori each scored nine and Lynkahlah recorded eight. Berea shot 42 percent from the field compared to 33 percent for the Tigers.
