Sewanee takes down No. 2 seed Centre to reach SAA Finals

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Laurel Burkhardt was again on fire as she had 17 kills as the Tigers upset the No. 2 seed, Centre on Saturday evening in the semifinals of the SAA Tournament in five sets. The teams alternated sets as the Tigers took the opening set 25-17, the final score was 25-17, 15-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-11. This is the first time in recent program history that the Tigers have reached the finals of the conference tournament.

Burkhardt tied her career high of six blocks and recorded 17 kills as she led the team in hitting percentage, recording .326, collecting 20 points for the match. Olivia Jones tallied 10 total points for the Tigers as she posted seven kills, five digs, four blocks, two assists, and an ace. Emma Meyer had 27 assists and eight digs, a kill, and an ace. Adele Cassidy anchored the Tigers' defense as she picked up 24 digs and an assist. Sophia Caruso picked up 16 digs and Jacqueline Weller tallied 13.

In the first set, both teams played even but at nine all, the Tigers went on an 11-1 run. The Colonels were unable to recover from their deficit as the Tigers took the first set 25-17. Both teams recorded 12 kills, but Centre had 8 errors to Sewanee's 4.

In the second set, the Colonels had two unanswered five-point runs to capture and maintain the momentum of the set. The Tigers only delivered five kills to the Colonels 14. Sewanee came back in the third and got up to an early lead off a seven-point run with Jones serving. The Colonels fought themselves back into the set and gained the lead at 21-22. However, the Tigers fought back and two back-to-back kills from Burkhardt sealed the set for Sewanee. The fourth proved to be another close set until 14 all when Centre had an eight-point unanswered run to force a fifth set.

Centre got up to an early lead in the fifth set, 5-1, but the Tigers answered right back with a 10-to-one run of their own to shift the momentum back and go up 11-7. From there, four kills by the Tigers sealed the match 15-11 and booked their ticket to the SAA finals.

Sewanee will face Berry in the finals tomorrow at 1 pm ET in Rome, Ga.
