Tigers drop tight season opener against Piedmont

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Olivia Falvey posted 22 points in the Tigers season opener against Piedmont on Saturday afternoon in LaGrange, Ga. at the CCS / SAA Classic. 

Sewanee went 24-of-57 (42.1%) from the field, shooting 40% from three. Both teams collected 16 points off turnovers and the Lions tallied double the Tigers' points on second-chance points.  

Piedmont shot 44.9% from the field but was 0 for 14 on three-point attempts. The Lions also struggled with their free throws, making only 12-23, on the flip side, the Tigers were 14-18 on the line. 

Sophomore Olivia Falvey led the charge offensively for Sewanee with 22 points. Falvey went 9-11 from the field and added 12 rebounds for her first double-double. Lilly Phillips added 15 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Freshman, Brianna Keating-Renson posted eight points and three rebounds and Cydney Wright and Faith Humphrey each had seven points. 

The Tigers gained their largest lead of the game in the third quarter, going up by five 51-45, and held the lead going into the fourth period. A back-and-forth fourth quarter produced five ties in the score, with 70 all and 23 seconds left on the clock. The Lions were able to pull away with 10 seconds on the clock with a foul by the Tigers sending Piedmont Ashley Scott to the line where she converted both extra points, the Tigers then fouled again sending Laken Stiles to the line where she converted free throws to secure the win for the Lions 74-70. 

The Tigers take on LaGrange tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET to conclude their first weekend of play.
