Burkhardt tallies 16 kills to send the Tigers to the SAA Semifinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Laurel Burkhardt had 16 kills as the Tigers defeated Millsaps in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament on Friday afternoon in Rome, Ga.

Burkhardt closed out the last two sets with kills to send the Tigers to the semifinals of the conference tournament on Saturday at Berry College. Burkhardt hit .267 for the day as she also tallied 16 kills, two blocks, and six digs for 18 total points. Olivia Jones also hit .267 as she recorded only one error on nine kills. She also collected 12 digs, two blocks, and a service ace. Both setters, Jessie Atkinson and Emma Meyer also added two service aces each to the Tigers' seven total for the match. Meyer added 29 assists, 15 digs, and two kills to her day. Adele Cassidy recorded 29 digs and two assists as libero.

The Tigers played a tight first set against Millsaps as there were five ties of score. Sewanee maintained an early lead, but the Majors fought back with a late five-point unanswered run to stay in the set at 19 all. The Majors were able to capitalize on the momentum shift and take the first set, 23-25.

Both teams played a close beginning of the second set, but at 10 all, the Tigers found themselves with an 8-2 run to go up 18-11. Sewanee was able to maintain their lead and found themselves with their first set point at 24-18. The Majors were able to fight off three set points, but the Tigers were able to take the second set off a kill by Charlotte Lee, 25-21.

Sewanee found themselves with an early lead in the third set but Millsaps was able to find a way into the set at eight all and then went on a six-point unanswered run. However, the Tigers kept themselves in the fight, forcing another tie score at 15 and 17 all. The Tigers then took advantage of a couple of errors by the Majors and kills by Jones and Weller. Burkhardt then closed out the third set for the Tigers with a service ace.

Both teams came out swinging as they traded off kills to open the final set. Millsaps led by a slim margin for the majority of the set but a block by Weller and Nicole Radford gave Sewanee their second lead of the set at 23-22. A late six-point run by the Tigers ended with back-to-back kills by Weller and Burkhardt to send the Tigers to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Sewanee will face the No. 2 seed Centre in the semifinals of the SAA tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET in Rome, Ga.
