Sewanee Volleyball outlasts Millsaps in five sets

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Olivia Jones recorded 11 kills with one error as Sewanee won a tight battle against Millsaps on Sunday afternoon in five sets, 15-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 20-18.

The Tigers had two players who hit over .300 for the match, both only recording one error. Jones posted .417 and Maria Kennedy hit .333 percent. Emma Meyer and Jessie Atkins both posted their season-high assists, Meyer with 33 and Atkins with 20. Both setters also posted 13 and 14 digs for the night, behind the senior libero, Adele Cassidy with 22.

Millsaps controlled the first set as they got off to an early lead and were able to maintain it for the rest of the set. Despite Sewanee's 11 kills in the first, Millsaps took the first, 25-15.

The Tigers regrouped in the second set and improved their hitting average, there were three score changes and ties in the second set but they all came at the beginning. An early eight-point run for the Tigers down 4-6 proved to be instrumental as the Majors were never able to recover as the Tigers evened the match score to one set all.

In the third, the Tigers trailed early and were not able to catch the Majors as they hit .300 as a team coming away with the third set.

The fourth set proved to be closer as there were three lead changes and 8 ties of score. The Tigers had 18 kills on the set compared to the Majors 10. Sewanee forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

The fifth set proved to be a battle for both teams as both teams had match points. The Major's match point came first at 14-13 but a kill by Savannah Gann kept the Tigers in the match. Millsaps had their second and final match point but were again shut down by a kill, this time from Laurel Burkhardt. The Tigers then had their chance of match points as the Majors saved three but were unable to keep the Tigers off the board as they won the third set, 20-18.

The Tigers move to 5-2 in conference play as they head on the road again next weekend, October 13 and 14 to play Berry and Oglethorpe.
