SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Katye Dullye and
Olivia Fee both scored second-half goals on corner kicks and Sewanee held on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rhodes in women's soccer action here Friday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (6-1-3, 3-0 SAA) ran their unbeaten streak to nine games since a season-opening loss to top-ranked Johns Hopkins and remained perfect in conference action as well.
The teams combined for just seven total shots in the first half, with lots of possession in the middle of the field but neither able to break through and challenge the goal in the final third.
Things changed quickly in the second half thanks to a well-executed corner kick by Sewanee, with
Maggie O'Hare serving a ball to the back post. Dullye headed in the goal low and left just 7:01 in the period and the Tigers led, 1-0.
The Tigers nearly scored again seconds later when O'Hare's point-blank shot was saved and
Samantha Ferry's rebound was cleared away by a Rhodes defender.
The Lynx (7-3-1, 2-1-0) answered less than 10 minutes later, with Sophia Rall playing a ball down the leftside to Esther Lamb, who fumbled the pass a bit but found a streaking Grace Culver for a right-footed shot just outside the box that found the back of the net just inside the near post in the 62
nd minute, equalizing for the visitors.
Once again Sewanee scored on another corner 61 seconds later. This time O'Hare's ball went well past the far post and Dullye headed it to the opposite post where Fee was there for the eventual game-winner.
"Tonight was as great result against a great team. The ladies really came through on two critical set pieces that ended up deciding the match for us against our rivals," said head coach
Greg Cathell. "In a match that had a playoff atmosphere, it was great to get the hard-fought result in front of our home crowd."
The Tigers defense held off a late charge from Rhodes, keeping Sewanee undefeated in league play.
Sewanee's
Leah Atkins made two saves in the win while Rhodes' Maggie Wakefield collected one save.
The Tigers play their final home regular season match Sunday, hosting Hendrix at 11 a.m. Senior Day activities will take place before the match for three seniors.
