Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

First-half goals carry women's soccer to win

Tigers remain undefeated in conference play

SEWANEE, Tenn.Kylene Monaghan and Katye Dullye both scored in the first half and Maggie O'Hare assisted on both goals in Sewanee's 2-0 victory over Hendrix in women's soccer action here Sunday at Puett Field.

The Tigers (7-1-3, 4-0-0 SAA) dominated possession for the entire match, outshooting the Warriors, 20-2, and posted a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks, with the second goal coming from a corner. Hendrix (10-4-0, 2-2-0) had defenders clear away two more scoring chances by Sewanee in the second half, keeping the home team from adding to its lead.

After an uneven first 20 minutes to the match, with the Warriors' physical style affecting Sewanee's ability to possess the ball and connect passes, the home team broke through with a goal.

O'Hare received the ball in the middle of the field, made a run toward the middle and passed down the leftside to a streaking Monaghan. Her left-footed shot to the far post finished in the side net for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 Sewanee edge in the 27th minute.

O'Hare was again part of the scoring six minutes later, with her corner kick bouncing across the box near the top of the 18. Dullye squared the ball and it went under the hands of Hendrix goalkeeper Kennedy Lewis for a 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute.

The first goal seemed to ignite Sewanee's offensive attack, leading to a 9-0 lead in shots at intermission along with an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. O'Hare nearly scored at the back post on a cross by Khiana Monaghan just before the half but the shot sailed high and another great corner from O'Hare hit the top of Dullye's head, also at the back post.

Samantha Ferry's half-volley from near the penalty spot was blocked over the net by a Hendrix defender midway through the second half and Dullye just missed another goal at the far post on a corner late in the period.

"What a great day for the seniors and Sewanee women's soccer," head coach Greg Cathell said. "Maggie having two assists, CeCe [Cobb] being electric in wide spaces and Leah [Atkins] putting up another shutout couldn't have been a better culmination of their careers wrapped into one match. We are very blessed and honored to have had these ladies the last four years."

Sewanee plays its final four matches of the regular season on the road, beginning next weekend with outings at Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
