Atkinson tallies career-high assists as volleyball drops five-set match at Hendrix

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Jessie Atkinson recorded a career-high of 33 assists, but the Tigers fell in a tight five sets to Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas on Saturday afternoon, (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 10-15).

Atkinson blew her career-high record out of the water as she posted 33 assists beseting her previous high of 24 assists in the 2021 season. She also recorded her second double-double of the year and fifth of her career as she registered 10 digs, one kill, and one ace. Jacqueline Weller also recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. 

The Tigers also had three players hit above 300, Olivia Jones leading the Tigers again posting a hitting average of .619 with 13 kills with no errors. Jones also recorded seven digs, two assists, and one block for the day. Laurel Burkhardt hit .314 with 15 kills, one block, and three digs, recording 17.5 points for the match. Ashley Crosby recorded 11 kills on two errors hitting .300 in five sets. 

As libero, Adele Cassidy posted 25 digs, six assists, and two aces. Emma Meyer also tallied 20 assists and eight digs. 

Sewanee (17-9, 7-6) came out strong as they collected 17 kills in the first set, in the second set, they posted 11 kills with no errors and hit for .393 as a team. Hendrix made fewer errors in the third set as both teams had 14 kills, but the Warriors only posted four errors to the Tigers six. In the fourth set, Sewanee recorded more kills and errors than Hendrix as the Warriors forced the match to a deciding fifth set. In the deciding set, the Tigers and Warriors were neck and neck as they alternated between each team taking the lead. At 7 all, Hendrix took the momentum and posted a three-point run that the Tigers were not able to recover from as the Warriors took the fifth set, 15-10. 

Sewanee travels to Rhodes to conclude regular season conference play on the road Sunday at Noon CT before returning home to conclude their regular season against No. 25 Covenant at home for their senior day Thursday at 6 p.m.
