Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Samantha Ferry scored a pair of goals and
Kylene Monaghan assisted on both, helping top-seeded Sewanee to a 3-0 victory over Millsaps in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championships here Saturday at Puett Field.
The Tigers (11-1-4) advance to the semifinals this Friday, November 3, to face a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Semifinals and a possible championship match would be hosted by Sewanee next weekend.
Ferry found the back of the net in the 15
th minute and again in the 58
th minute, her fourth and fifth goals of the year, scoring early in both halves for Sewanee. The Tigers dominated possession and the run of play the entire match, limiting Millsaps (1-14-2) to one shot in the entire 90 minutes.
Sewanee outshot the Majors, 25-1, in the victory.
The Tigers scored in the 15
th minute to take an early lead, with
Brianna Fee crossing from the right to Monaghan, whose shot hit the left post. The ricochet fell to the feet of Ferry, who fired into an open net for a 1-0 edge.
Sewanee produced several other excellent scoring chances in the period, but Millsaps goalkeeper Emily Lozano kept the home team off the board again until late in the half, thwarting efforts by Fee,
Khiana Roraback and
Lacey Carder on thru balls.
The Tigers added a score late in the period, with
Kate Thomson finding
Lily Reinhardtsen down the leftside and the sophomore scoring past Lozano from the bad angle in the 42
nd minute.
In the second half Monaghan played a long ball down the left side and Ferry's shot beat Lozano to the far post for the final goal of the match. The Tigers subbed freely over the final 30 minutes, keeping players fresh for next weekend's outings.
