Sewanee’s Department of Athletics announces three internal promotions

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Director of Athletics John Shackelford announced promotions for three individuals within the department—Carrie Austin to associate director of athletics, and Michele Dombrowski and Nick DiBernardo to assistant directors of athletics, both in addition to their coaching duties.

Austin joined the Sewanee athletics staff in February 2022 as assistant director for internal operations.

"Carrie is a tremendous and enthusiastic leader of both our coaching and administrative staff," Shackelford says. "She manages much of our day-to-day operations, serving more than 550 student-athletes in 24 varsity sports. Her attention to detail and her ability to think through issues requiring complex problem-solving skills are a real asset to the University and our department."

In addition to her new administrative roles, Dombrowksi serves as head coach for women's lacrosse, senior woman administrator, and assistant coach for field hockey. Over the past two years, she has led the department's efforts to construct a strategic plan and manage eligibility procedures for all student-athletes.

"Michele is an experienced hand in athletic administration and has a real interest in long-term planning for our department," Shackelford says. "She has the ability to translate vision into action and will be on the front lines as we fulfill the needs of our next generation of students."

DiBernardo has coached men's lacrosse at Sewanee since 2015, working six years as an assistant coach before taking over the program as head coach in 2021. He manages all athletic facility needs and new construction.

"Nick has been a vital member of our team for some time now, and regularly meets with contractors, vendors, and our business office as we manage both deferred maintenance and facility enhancement issues," Shackelford says. "Nick sees beyond just the needs of his own program and thinks daily about ways to strengthen this University to make it both a welcoming place and an instrument for the educational process beyond the walls of the classroom."

Shackelford concluded, "We are fortunate to have staff members willing to step forward and accept additional responsibility that serves the needs of our students, families, alumni, and the Sewanee community. These three, along with an incredible group of coaches and support staff, are making the Department of Athletics a vital piece of the educational mission of the University."
