SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior
Brianna Fee scored in the 70
th minute, helping Sewanee overcome an early PK in a 1-1 draw against Belhaven in women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.
The Tigers (10-1-4) pushed their unbeaten streak to 14 matches with the draw, controlling the run of play for much of the game and outshooting the Blazers, 19-3, overall.
The very physical match included 15 total fouls, 11 by Belhaven, with the Blazers (12-3-2) knocking away passes and cutting off through balls in Sewanee's offensive zone.
Maggie O'Hare's free kick from just outside the box went wide right in the 66
th minute but Fee found the equalizer four minutes later for her ninth goal of the year.
The Tigers had one last chance in the final minute on another free kick just outside the box, but
Kylene Monaghan's shot off a pass from O'Hare was saved by Belhaven goalkeeper Julianne Wilson, who finished with six stops in the match.
The Blazers got on the board just 69 seconds into the match when
CeCe Cobb was whistled for a foul in the box. Kaci Craft buried the PK low and right and Belhaven took a 1-0 advantage, just the third team all season to hold a lead on the Tigers.
Sewanee was unable to even the match in the first half despite an 8-3 advantage in shots.
The Tigers host Millsaps College this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Puett Field in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championships. Sewanee enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after claiming its second consecutive SAA regular season title with a win this past Saturday at 19
th-ranked Centre College.
