BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of the South softball team is set to open the 2022 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Softball Tournament this weekend from the Birmingham-Southern Pod on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.
THE BASICS
Quarterfinals: (6) Sewanee (7-24, 3-10) vs. (3) Millsaps (17-21, 11-7) | April 22, 2:30 p.m.
BSC Softball Park, Birmingham, Ala.
(7) Centre (10-28, 4-14) and (2) Birmingham-Southern (29-6, 13-3) also make up the BSC pod. Sewanee's next opponent on Saturday will be determined based on the outcome on Friday.
NEW SAA TOURNEY FORMAT: New this year, instead of all teams flocking to one site, the tournament will be broken down into pods, similar to a regional-super regional format in the NCAA Tournament.
The top-two seeds of the event will host the two pods, and it will remain a double-elimination format.
Berry College, the regular season champions of the SAA, earned the No. 1 seed and is the other host for the first weekend of the tournament.
The winners of each pod will advance to the championship series April 30 and May 1 at the highest remaining seed.
ALICE ON TOP: Junior
Alice Charboneau has recorded a .435 batting average to put her in second place in the SAA, but she has been on fire the last seven games at the plate. She has tallied 16 hits in her last 24 at-bats with three doubles, two home runs, six runs scored and 10 RBI.
Additionally, she has recorded a base hit in nine straight games.
ON-BASE EVE: Sophomore transfer
Eve Bournias has reached base in five straight games and 13 of her last 16. Her .323 batting average is just outside the top-30 in the league.
