Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The University of the South volleyball team, despite a career-best by Laurel Burkhardt, dropped a four-set match at Covenant College, Friday night, from Barnes Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Covenant used a strong first set, winning 13 of 14 points, to lead 14-3. In the frame, the Scots posted 13 kills on a .256 attack percentage (13-3-39) to defeat the Tigers, 25-17. 

-In set number two, Covenant again had a big rally to get out to a 12-3 lead early. Sewanee did make it a 13-9 deficit, but the home team committed just two attack errors (14-2-36) and a .333 swing percentage to take the 2-0 match lead. 

-Sewanee did prevail in the third set, thanks to 18 kills, including back-to-back kills by Ellie Pedersen to win, 26-24.

-Covenant came back strong in the fourth set to defeat Sewanee, 25-17. After Sewanee made it a 20-17 deficit thanks to an Olivia Jones spike, Covenant won the last five points to win the match. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Laurel Burkhardt improved her career best in kills to 21 on Friday night, becoming the first Tiger so 20 kills in a match this season and the first since last October. 

-Ellie Pedersen had 12 kills on 24 attacks without committing an error. The Nashville, Tenn. native added two total blocks and an ace for 15 points. 

-Ashley Crosby also had 12 kills, while Adele Cassidy tallied 24 digs. 

-Jessie Atkinson recorded a double-double with 23 assists and 13 digs. 

COVENANT KEY STATISTICS
-Kyla Bailey also had a 20-kill performance for the Scots, setting a new career high. Finishing with 23.5 points, she committed two attack errors on 51 swings. Additionally, she totaled 16 digs. 

UP NEXT
With the regular season in the books, the Tigers will turn their attention to the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Sewanee enters the tournament as the 5-seed and will take on Oglethorpe in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 4 from The Cage Center on the campus of Berry College.
