Volleyball Sweeps Maryville, MUW in Rome

ROME, Ga. - The University of the South volleyball team secured a Saturday sweep over Maryville College and the Mississippi University for Women from the Cage Center as a part of the Berry College Invitational. 

The Tigers took down the Scots in five sets, and they swept the Owls in straight sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MARYVILLE
-Maryville opened the match with a 25-20 score, but the Purple and White won the next two sets, edging the Scots 25-21 and 25-23. 

-Maryville would force a fifth set with a fourth set score of 25-18, but it was Sewanee that prevailed with a 15-6 win in the deciding set to win the match. 

-The Scots were recieving votes in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) coaches poll. 

NOTES AND NUGGETS
-On Saturday, Sewanee stopped a 15-match losing skid to Maryville, winning their first match against the Scots for the first time since Sept. 4, 1999. 

-Additionally, it is the first time the team went to five sets since 1996. Sewanee is 4-1 all-time in five-set matches against Maryville. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Statistics are considered unofficial at the time of release. 

-Lilly Reilly led the Tigers with seven kills and added 15 digs, and Lydia Goffi posted six service aces and kills each. 

-Anna Ball led Sewanee with 16 digs and added three service aces. 

MARYVILLE KEY STATISTICS
-Isabella Smson posted a match-high 13 kills and added 10 digs. She finished the day with 17.5 points. 

-Amii Ingalls posted 16 digs, while Landry Frisch totaled 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MUW
-Sewanee took care of business against MUW in the nightcap with a sweep of the Owls, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19. 

-Unofficially, the Tigers held the Owls to a .042 attack percentage (25-20-120). 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Statistics are considered unofficial at the time of release. 

-Laurel Burkhardt and Olivia Jones each totaled six kills to lead the Tigers attack. 

-Kaylee Scharfman posted 13 assists and seven digs, while Adele Cassidy led the Purple and White with nine digs. 

MUW KEY STATISTICS
-Maggie Griggs led the Owls with seven kills and added five digs. 

-Madison Griggs and Zoe Hansen had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Sewanee will return home for a tri-match with Centre and Covenant on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
