Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Regionals

ROME, Ga. - The University of the South men's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships this past weekend, Sept. 24-26, from the Rome Tennis Center. Six student-athletes earned a spot in the Round of 16 in the main Singles Draw, while three sets of doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the main Doubles Draw. 

In total, the Purple and White posted a 33-18 record in singles and 15-8 in doubles.

SINGLES MAIN DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
-Six Tigers made it to the Main Draw Round of 16, led by Jax Harbour's appearance in the quarterfinals. 

-Harbour won three matches in the Main Draw to make it to the quarterfinals. The sophomore posted a straight-set win over Vince Claussen of Oglethorpe in the opening round.

-In the round of 32, taking on Nicolo Iacoboni of N.C. Wesleyan, Harbour took the opening set with a 7-6 (4) victory. However, despite falling 4-6 in the second set, he stormed back to a 6-1 win in the third set to advance. 

-Next for Harbour was his teammate, Jackson Davis. After Davis won the opener, 3-6, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native used another tiebreak win, 7-6 (3), followed by a 6-3 third set to advance to the quarterfinals. 

-Antonio Mora of Emory ended Harbour's run in the draw, taking the victory, 6-1, 6-2. 

-For Ryan Olps. after posting straight-set victories of Gill Dunn of Covenant and Vittorio Noli of N.C. Wesleyan to advance to the round of 16, he and his opponent Brandon Cohen did not know what was ahead for them. 

-The duo played three straight tiebreaker sets in their matchup. Olps secured the first tiebreak, but it was Cohen who rallied to win the next two sets to advance. The match was timed at over four and a half hours, one of the longest matches in history of the regional championships. 

-Before falling to teammate Harbour in the Round of 16, Jackson Davis posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Phillips of Rhodes in the Round of 64. In the next round, the sophomore played three sets with John Falke of N.C. Wesleyan to defeat him, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5. 

-Matt Barnett knocked out John Kimball of Millsaps, 6-3, 6-2, and Sahil Raina of Emory, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 (5) to advance to the Round of 16.

-Freshmen Quinn Wicklund and Talman Ramsey shined in their first collegiate tournament. Wicklund won two matches against Emerson Dean of Centre, 6-1, 6-1, and Ben Luke of Covenant, 6-4, 6-1.

-Ramsey also posted his first two collegiate wins, defeating Wil Dotson of BSC, 6-4, 6-1, and Luca Knese of N.C. Wesleyan, 6-2, 6-3. 

-Freshman Gil Weston picked up a win in the tournament, defeating Santiago Suarez, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5. 

-Despite falling in the opening round, Ryan Stafford won two additional matches in the consolation round. 

DOUBLES MAIN DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
-Sewanee saw three teams appear in the quarterfinals. 

-Liam Baer/Hugh Graham secured two wins over Dani/Cohen of Oglethorpe (8-5) and Holmes/Mosarwa of N.C. Wesleyan (8-4). In the quarters, the duo battled to a tiebreak with Emory's Dean/Suarez, but the Eagles edged the Tiger duo, 10-8, to win the set, 8-7. 

-Freshmen Weston/Ramsey also won two matches in doubles. After edging BSC, 8-6, in the Round of 32, the duo secured the 8-7 (2) win over Trudell/Crump of Rhodes. 

-Noah Holsclaw/Olps posted two wins as well in the main draw, defeating Cohen/Glanville of Emory, 8-6, and Falke/Robinson of N.C. Wesleyan, 8-5. 

-In the consolation round, the duo of Thomas Harrison/Ryan Wax and Liam Selvido/Mark Motlow each won two matches. 

B1 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Graham and Baer dominated the secondary draw for the Tigers, as they both made it to the final. 

-Graham posted three wins, taking down Solomon Crouch of Covenant, Michael Moll and Max Robinson of N.C. Wesleyan in straight sets. 

-Baer also secured three dubs of Matthew Poulow of Centre, Ryan Crump of Rhodes and Matan Amitay of N.C. Wesleyan. 

B2 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Selvido appeared in the finals of the B2 Singles Draw, going 3-1 for the freshman. 

B4 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Wax swept the competition in the B4 draw, taking all four matches he saw. The senior posted back-to-back wins over N.C. Wesleyan's Valen Morelli and Tomas Cardazzi. 

D2 DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Harbour/Stafford won three matches in the draw, posting a combined 24-6 set score in those three doubles affairs.
