Volleyball Goes Five with Trevecca; Falls in Spring Finale

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South volleyball program rallied from a 2-0 set score to force a fifth set with NCAA Division II Trevecca Nazarene University, but it was the visiting Trojans who took home the 3-2 victory over the Tigers, Friday night from Juhan Gymnasium.

CLASS OF 2021
-Prior to first serve Friday night, Haley Gauthier and Olivia Nichols were recognized on Senior Night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Trevecca came out firing on all cylinders in the first two sets, out-killing the Tigers, 29-8 en route to a 25-19 and 25-14 set wins to lead the match, 2-0.

-In the third set, Sewanee roared back in a loud way, and they also had a little help with errors committed by TNU. The Tigers got out to a 4-0 lead in the frame thanks in part by back-to-back block assists. Adele Cassidy and Lilly Reilly stopped the first attack, while Ellie Pedersen and Laurel Burkhardt posted the second one.

-Despite Trevecca getting back-to-back points to trail 4-2, Sewanee went on a 7-2 run to lead 11-4 as the Purple and White won the third set, 25-18.

-In the fourth set, the swings came to life from the Tiger attackers, as they recorded 13 kills and posted a .308 attack percentage (13-5-25).

-As in the third, the hosts stormed out to a 7-2 lead; however, the lead would not last, as the visitors would eventually tie the game at 18 points each.

-Following a Sewanee timeout, the teams traded the next four points. After a Trevecca service error to give Sewanee the 21-20 advantage, Sewanee won four of the final five points to force the deciding fifth set.

-In the fifth, after TNU won the first two points, Sewanee won the next four points to lead, 4-2. The pendulum went back to the visitors and they won the next five points to lead 7-4.

-The streakiness moved back to the home team's side, as they won the next four points to lead 8-7. Burkhardt gave the Purple and White the 8-7 lead from a Reilly pass.

-After Trevecca won the next three points to reclaim the lead, 10-8, Sewanee rallied to win the next two points thanks to kills by Burkhardt and Lydia Goffi as the score was deadlocked at 10 points apiece.

-However, the Trojans put down the hammer, winning the final five points to secure the set and match.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Laurel Burkhardt led the way for the Sewanee in Friday's match. Playing in just three sets, the freshman recorded a match-high 10 kills and posted a .269 hitting percentage (10-3-26).

-Sydney White recorded 21 digs on the night, missing her career-high of 25 by four set her freshman year.

-Ellie Pedersen and Lydia Goffi each added seven kills, while Lexi Williams posted 24 assists.

TREVECCA NAZARENE KEY STATISTICS
-Austyn Baldwin led all attackers with 16 kills with a .429 swing percentage (16-4-28).

-Ellie Buffler added 15 kills, while Claire Hindman recorded nine digs to lead the Trojans.
