Volleyball Bounces Back with Four-Set Victory Over Rhodes

MEMPHIS - The Sewanee volleyball team earned a weekend split in Southern Athletic Association play on Sunday by edging Rhodes College in four sets inside Mallory Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Tigers started the match on a high note. Leading 9-7, the visitors went on a 10-2 run to lead 19-9.

-The Lynx did not go away quietly, scoring eight of the next nine points to make it a 20-17 score, but the Tigers finished the set winning five of the final eight points to give Sewanee the 25-20 set victory.

-In the second set, the Tigers out-attacked the Lynx with 15 kills to 12, but the home team pulled out a 25-23 victory by only committing four errors.

-Trailing 23-19, the Tigers scored the next four points to tie the set, but Rhodes recorded the set victory by winning the next two points on a kill and a Sewanee attack error, respectively.

-The Tigers bounced back to take a 2-1 match lead in the third set, but it did not come easy. Earning set point after going on a 6-0 run, Sewanee allowed the cross-state rivals to score the next four points to tie the set at 24 points apiece.

-The final two points came by the Tigers thanks to an Ellie Pedersen kill and an Anna Ball ace.

-The Tigers secured the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. After a block assist by the Lynx to put it at 24-23, Sewanee won the match on a Lydia Goffi kill.

-For the match, Sewanee posted 57 kills, the most in a four-set match in 2019, while recording a season-high 74 points.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Lilly Reilly led all attackers with 16 kills and added 15 digs.

-Destiny Stewart posted 18 digs and 15 kills with three assisted blocks.

-Ellie Pedersen had eight total points thanks to five kills, four assisted blocks and one solo block.

-Constance Connolly recorded a season-high 48 assists and added 18 digs.

RHODES KEY STATISTICS
-Emily Korba had 13 kills to lead the Lynx, while Kelsy Glasper posted 21 digs and nine kills.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will remain on the road next weekend to take on No. 5 Berry Saturday afternoon.
