Volleyball Eliminated from SAA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Sewanee volleyball team concluded the 2019 season with a straight-set loss to the regular season champions in Birmingham-Southern in the 2019 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Volleyball Tournament Saturday evening from Bill Battle Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-BSC made it a 22-15 lead in the first set before the Tigers captured three straight points to make it a four-point deficit. However, the home team won the final three points, capped by an assisted block by Rebecca Erwin and Leah Nielsen to take the opening set, 25-18.

-The Panthers started the second set with a 9-3 run before a 16-7 lead when Sewanee burned a timeout. BSC, leading 17-11, won eight of the final 10 points to take a 2-0 lead.

-In the third set, BSC had a 19-12 lead before the Tigers called a timeout. The visitors went on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to four points, but Birmingham-Southern won the final four points to win the match.

-The Panthers will advance to face 2-seed Berry in the tournament championship on Sunday.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Sydney White had 17 digs to lead Sewanee, while Lilly Reilly added 10 digs and nine kills.

-Destiny Stewart added nine digs and eight kills.

-After recording 19 assists in Saturday's semifinal match, Constance Connolly ends her career with 2,779, good for second all-time in SAA history. The Germantown, Tenn. native also contributed 11 digs to finish with 1,062 in her career.

BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN KEY STATISTICS
-Alyssa Coats led the Panthers with 14 digs and 13 kills.

-Caroline Johnson added 17 digs for BSC.
