Sewanee Downed by Centre in Five Set Tilt

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Sewanee volleyball team, despite having a team hitting percentage of .206, were unable to fend off Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opponent Centre in five sets, falling to the Colonels 24-26, 25-16, 25-13, 24-26, 17-19, Tuesday night at the Alumni Gym.

The Tigers rallied to take a 2-1 set lead before falling in the final two sets.

In the fifth set, the teams went back-and-forth, with nobody having a lead as big as two points. Down 12-10 in the deciding set, the Tigers tied the contest at 12 thanks to a Destiny Stewart kill and a Centre attack error.

After a Centre timeout, the Colonels scored the next two points to retake the lead, 14-12, for match point.

Following a Sewanee timeout, the Tigers (7-7, 1-4) rallied to tie the match again at 14 after back-to-back attack errors by Centre.

The Tigers, tied at 15, had a chance to win the set after another attack error to make the score 16-15, but the Colonels would tie the contest up again at 16 points apiece.

After a Centre (5-8, 2-3) service error, Sewanee, for the second time, had the advantage to win it, but the Colonels took the next three points for the win.

Destiny Stewart, who entered the week in the top 20 in kills nationally at 19th, finished with 24 kills on a .375 attack percentage (24-6-48). She missed collecting her seventh double-double of the year by one dig, earning nine for the Purple and Gold to go along with her four block assists.

Olivia Nichols totaled a match-high 14 kills with eight digs and three blocks.

Constance Connolly recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs.

Hailey Foote posted 19 kills to lead the Colonels.

Sewanee returns home this weekend to take on Berry in SAA play. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Juhan Gymnasium.
