PASADENA, Calif. (March 22, 2017) – The No. 23 ranked Sewanee men's tennis team hammered Caltech 8-1, Wednesday.
Sewanee is now an impressive 11-2 this season with its only losses coming against No. 21 Mary Washington and No. 8 Redlands.
Sewanee opened play as Jack Gray and Alejandro Becker held on for a close 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles against Ruthwick Pathireddy and Sathwick Pathireddy. At No. 2 doubles, Andres Carro and Jordan Brewer earned an 8-5 victory over Zixao Li and Derik Nguyen. Sewanee completed the sweep in doubles when Avery Schober and Aubrey Davis rolled over Morgan Lebby and Miha Valencic, 8-3.
In singles, Schober survived a tough match against Ruthwick Pathireddy at No. 1 winning the match after falling in the first set 4-6. Schober rallied back with a 6-2 win in the second and then won a back-and-forth third-set tiebreaker at 11-9.
At No. 2 singles, Carro swept Liu with a pair of 6-0 set wins while at No. 3 Gray had little trouble against Nguyen winning 6-2, 6-2.
Finally, Davis defeated Tine Valencic at No. 6 in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Sewanee returns to action with a 4:00 p.m. match at regional-rival Covenant, Friday.
