A late goal by Hawes leads Sewanee to a 2-1 win over Huntingdon

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2016)  After four straight road matches, the Sewanee men's soccer team proved it was good to be home Tuesday as the Tigers defeated visiting Huntingdon 2-1 at Puett Field.

Sewanee dominated possession in the first half. The Tigers controlled the pace of play for nearly 85 percent of the opening 45 minutes. With that, Sewanee took 15 shots while limiting Huntingdon to only one attempt.

After neither team scored in the first half, both offenses found the back of the net early after halftime. Sewanee netted the first goal when freshman Reid Turner served a beautiful pass across the box where Zach Birkhead headed home the goal.

Unfortunately, Huntingdon immediately answered back. On the ensuing kickoff, Jean Jocelyn found Mac Puller racing toward the top of the box. As the ball played through, Puller perfectly placed a shot over Tiger keeper Will Merriman.

With the score at 1-1, Sewanee settled back in. After multiple scoring opportunities missed, the Tigers finally scored the game-winner with just under five minutes to play. On a corner, freshman Alpo Sipillä served a great ball toward the near post where senior Max Hawes redirected the pass into the far post for his third goal this season.

Overall, Sewanee completely dominated the stats. The Tigers outshot the Hawks, 35-5. Sewanee also led in corners, 8-0.

Individually, Matt Hawse led eight players with multiple shots. Hawse finished with six shots while Hawes and Ryan MacDonald each finished with five attempts. Freshman Ben Vaeth and Sipillä also added four attempts.

Sewanee returns to SAA play this weekend with a 7:00 p.m. match at Oglethorpe, Saturday.
