Box Score LaGRANGE, Ga. (Sept. 1, 2016) – Two goals each half led the Sewanee men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over regional-rival LaGrange, Thursday.
The Tigers matched their season high in goals in a single match from 2015. With just under 15 minutes off the clock, midfielder Ryan McDonald ripped in a shot for the early lead.
Later in the half, freshman Johnny McNeil pushed the Tiger lead to 2-0 off an assist from Marco Randazzo.
After the opening half, the purple and gold's offense kept rolling. With the ball loose just outside the box, sophomore Kyle Johnston ripped a shot that was blocked. However, on the ensuing rebound, Parker Fay tapped in the Tigers' third goal at 60:35 in the second half.
After LaGrange's Brandon Burrell pulled the host Panthers to within two, Max Hawes added the final Sewanee goal in the 76th minute again off an assist from Johnston.
Overall, both teams finished with 10 shots and five corners. Alpo Sipillä and Ramsey Seagle both led the Tigers with two shots each. In goal, sophomore Will Merriman picked up where he left off after the 2015 season with four saves in the complete-match win.
Sewanee will look to win its second contest of the season when the Tigers open the BSU Puma Labor Day Classic Sunday against Louisana College. That match is scheduled to begin at noon in Birmingham, Ala.
