SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 24, 2015) – The No. 29 ranked NCAA Division III Sewanee men's tennis team gave NCAA Division I scholarship rival UT-Chattanooga everything they wanted and more Wednesday, as the visiting Mocs survived a 5-4 scare from the host Tigers inside the Charlotte Guerry Indoor Tennis Center.
Sewanee dropped its overall record to 4-2 this season. Both losses have come to an NCAA Division I program. The Tigers lost to nationally-ranked Middle Tennessee State University last weekend. Sewanee will play its final NCAA Division I team this spring when they travel to long-time rival No. 32 Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Sewanee opened by taking two of the three doubles matches. No. 2 ranked Eric Roddy and Jack Gray stayed unbeaten this season with an 8-4 win over John Peacey and Lucas Plesky.
At No. 3 doubles Avery Schober and Fletcher Kerr topped Nick Wingord and Pablo Llebeii, 8-4. UTC earned its lone early win as Derrick Brown and Luke Saunders squeaked past Alex Depascual and Scott Gallimore at No. 2, 8-5.
As singles action got underway Schober, Gray, Depascual, and Kerr all lost in close straight set contests.
The Tigers kept the score within reach and almost pulled out the upset as Roddy defeated Peacey at No. 2 6-4, 6-3. Additionally, Gallimore rolled over Brown at No. 5 in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
