Tigers score early and then hold off Covenant for a 1-1 double overtime draw

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 4, 2016)  An early goal by Matt Hawse helped the Sewanee men's soccer team to a 1-1 double overtime draw against regional-rival Covenant, Tuesday, at Puett Field.

The Tigers quickly scored as Ryan McDonald served a great deep pass into the box where Hawse timed his jump perfectly to head home the first goal with just 1:11 off the clock.

The score remained in favor of the Tigers at 1-0 until midway through the second half. After Sewanee keeper Will Merriman made a great save on a penalty kick, the ball bounced out which gave the Scots a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Sewanee tried to clear the ball and instead redirected the pass into the back of the net for an own goal.

Overall, Covenant edged Sewanee in shots 21-17. The Scots also led in corners by a slim margin at 9-6.

Individually, Merriman closed the evening with eight saves while Max Hawes and Reid Turner both led the attack with four shots.

Sewanee returns to SAA action with a 7:30 p.m. match against Millsaps, Friday.
